India scripted history by winning the T20 World Cup 2026 final after defeating New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Brilliant half-centuries from Sanju Samson (89), Ishan Kishan (54), and Abhishek Sharma (52) powered India to their third T20 World Cup title.

With this victory, Team India also became the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cup trophies and the first host nation to lift the title.

England and West Indies have each won the T20 World Cup twice, but India’s latest triumph sets a new milestone. The win also helped India rewrite history at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where they had lost the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia.

Talking about the match, India posted a massive 255/5 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first. In reply, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs. For the Kiwis, Tim Seifert scored a half-century, while captain Mitchell Santner contributed 43 runs.

Openers Dominate After a Slow Start

Despite criticism, India opened the innings with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Samson played cautiously in the first over but ended it with a six. Abhishek also started carefully before both batters began attacking the Kiwi bowlers.

Soon the pair started building the innings with boundaries and sixes.

India Smash 92 Runs in Powerplay

Abhishek Sharma found his rhythm in the third over with two boundaries and followed it with another four and a six in the fourth over.

India reached 92 runs without losing a wicket in the powerplay, one of the highest powerplay totals in T20 World Cup history.

India suffered their first setback at 98 runs when Abhishek Sharma, who smashed a 52 off 18 balls, was dismissed after completing a blazing half-century.

Ishan Kishan, coming in at No.3, immediately looked comfortable at the crease as India reached their 100 in just 7.2 overs.

Sanju Samson Hits Another Fifty

Sanju Samson continued the aggressive approach along with Ishan Kishan. Samson reached his half-century in 33 balls.

He had earlier scored 97 against West Indies in the Super-8 stage and 89 against England in the semifinal**, making it three consecutive 50+ scores in the tournament.

After completing his fifty, Samson became even more dangerous. In the 14th over, he smashed three consecutive sixes on the final three deliveries.

India raced to 203 runs in just 15 overs.

Samson Misses a Century

India suffered a big blow in the 16th over when Sanju Samson was dismissed for 89 off 46 balls. He tried to hit a full toss from James Neesham, but substitute fielder Cole McConchie took a catch at long-on.

Samson narrowly missed a well-deserved century.

Historic Record: Top Three Score 50+

The 16th over proved costly for India as James Neesham struck twice more, dismissing Ishan Kishan (54 off 25 balls) and captain Suryakumar Yadav (0).

Despite the setbacks, this match created a historic record — for the first time in T20 World Cup history, the top three batters of a team scored 50 or more runs in a single innings.

Late Push Takes India Past 250

India slowed down slightly after losing wickets, scoring 28 runs between overs 16 and 19. Hardik Pandya contributed 18 runs off 13 balls before getting out.

In the final over, Shivam Dube launched a late assault, smashing 3 fours and 2 sixes to take India past the 250-run mark.

Dube remained unbeaten on 26 off just 8 balls, while Tilak Varma added 8 runs*.

For New Zealand, James Neesham took 3 wickets, while Rachin Ravindra and Matt Henry picked up one each.

New Zealand’s Chase Falls Apart

Chasing 256 runs, New Zealand got an early lifeline when Shivam Dube dropped Finn Allen’s catch off Arshdeep Singh in the first over.

However, the breakthrough came soon when Axar Patel dismissed Finn Allen (9) after a brilliant catch by Tilak Varma.

Bumrah Leads India’s Bowling Attack

India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah struck immediately after being introduced, dismissing Rachin Ravindra (1) in the fourth over.

Axar Patel also bowled Glenn Phillips (5) soon after, leaving New Zealand struggling.

Meanwhile, Tim Seifert kept the scoreboard ticking from the other end and scored a quick 52 off 26 balls before being dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy.
