Pakistan has taken a final decision regarding the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka starting later this month. While Pakistan will participate in the tournament, it has decided to boycott its high-profile match against India, scheduled for February 15, 2026.

The Pakistani government has officially granted permission to the national team to take part in the T20 World Cup. However, approval has been given with a clear condition that Pakistan will not play the match against India, a contest traditionally considered one of the biggest and most watched clashes in world cricket.

Official Confirmation from Pakistan Government

An official post from the Pakistani government’s verified X (formerly Twitter) handle confirmed the decision, stating that the Pakistan cricket team will compete in the T20 World Cup 2026 but will not take the field for the match against India on February 15.

This announcement has sent shockwaves across the cricketing world, as India vs Pakistan matches are among the most anticipated fixtures in ICC tournaments.

Earlier Threat to Withdraw from the Tournament

Earlier, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi had threatened to withdraw from the tournament entirely in support of Bangladesh, which was excluded from the T20 World Cup 2026 by the ICC. Bangladesh had requested that all of its matches be held in Sri Lanka, citing security concerns in India for its players.

The ICC rejected Bangladesh’s request, following which Bangladesh refused to compromise. As a result, the ICC removed Bangladesh from the tournament and included Scotland in its place.

Political Intervention Led to Final Decision

Mohsin Naqvi had criticized the ICC’s decision, stating that Bangladesh was treated unfairly and hinted that Pakistan might also withdraw. He later clarified that the final decision would rest with the Pakistani government.

According to reports, PCB chief Naqvi met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on January 26, where the matter was discussed but no immediate decision was taken. The government has now finalized its stance, allowing Pakistan to compete in the tournament while opting out of the match against India.

Impact on the Tournament

The boycott of the India vs Pakistan match is expected to significantly impact the tournament’s viewership, revenue, and overall excitement. Cricket fans worldwide had been eagerly awaiting the clash, which will now not take place unless the decision is reversed.
