Ram Mandir Dharmadhwaj: Special Materials Used to Make the Flag Weatherproof for Years
The sacred flag hoisted atop the Ayodhya Ram Mandir is crafted using specially selected materials designed to withstand harsh weather conditions for years. High-quality fabrics, durable dyes, and advanced technology were used so the flag remains protected from sunlight, rain, and wind without losing its shine.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted this dharmadhwaj on the main shikhara of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. The flag has been manufactured by Gliders India Limited (GIL)—a prestigious Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence—and produced at the Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF), Kanpur.
18-Foot Long, Lightweight & Extremely Durable
The dharmadhwaj is 18 feet long and 9 feet high, weighing around 2 kilograms.
The sacred symbols on the flag include:
- Kovidar tree
- Sun (Surya) with an Om symbol inside
According to Shri Ram Mandir Trust sources, all materials used in the flag underwent thorough laboratory testing. Only after meeting quality and durability standards was the special fabric approved for use.
Made from Parachute-Grade Fabric
Crafted from parachute-grade fabric, the flag is:
- Exceptionally strong yet lightweight
- Easy to hoist at great heights
- Resistant to extreme weather
This unique material ensures the dharmadhwaj remains unaffected by adverse environments for three to four years, even in intense sun, rain, or high wind conditions. Multiple fabrics, reinforced tapes, and high-strength threads were used to maximize durability.
Custom-Designed for Ram Mandir Needs
The Ram Mandir Trust needed a lightweight yet extremely strong flag, and GIL fulfilled this requirement perfectly.
The finalized dharmadhwaj was handed over to the Trust on 18 November.
After multiple discussions with Trust officials, GIL created a standardized design that also received appreciation from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Remarkably, the entire flag was developed and delivered in just two weeks, with staff working day and night on the project.
