Gen Z Drives Growing Faith in Kainchi Dham: Youth Dominate Devotee Numbers, Infrastructure Gaps Highlighted

The global reputation of Kainchi Dham in Nainital is growing rapidly, especially among Gen Z devotees. According to a recent survey, the majority of visitors to the shrine of Neem Karoli Baba are young people aged 15 to 30 years, reflecting a strong spiritual inclination among India’s youth.

The highest number of devotees come from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Delhi and Bihar. Faith in Neem Karoli Baba is not limited to India—devotees also arrive from Nepal and the Netherlands. Significantly, over 95% of visitors visit the shrine purely for spiritual reasons, underscoring its religious importance rather than tourism-driven interest.

Survey Highlights: Who Is Visiting Kainchi Dham?

The survey was conducted by the Economics and Statistics Department, in collaboration with the Tourism Department, between August and October 2025, covering 3,000 devotees. Key findings include:

About 73.40% of visitors limited their trip to Kainchi Dham alone, while others also visited nearby destinations such as Nainital, Bhimtal, Mukteshwar, Almora, Kausani, Jageshwar, and Ranikhet.

Short Visits, High Footfall

The survey revealed that:

  • 64.77% of devotees returned the same day
  • Only 22% stayed in hotels or homestays
  • 99% completed darshan within one hour
  • Peak visiting time was between 11 am and 4 pm
  • 40.6% of devotees were repeat visitors

Infrastructure Concerns Raised

Despite the spiritual satisfaction, visitors expressed dissatisfaction with facilities:

  • 74% unhappy with parking arrangements
  • 58% dissatisfied with toilets and cleanliness
  • 54% concerned about waste management
  • 52% unhappy with health services
  • 24% dissatisfied with overall cleanliness

Government Steps In

Based on the survey findings, the Uttarakhand government has initiated corrective measures. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed officials to strengthen infrastructure and visitor amenities. As part of the improvements, parking facilities for 400 vehicles will become operational from June, aiming to ease congestion and enhance the pilgrimage experience.

Tourism Secretary Dheeraj Singh Garbyal confirmed that future development plans for Kainchi Dham will be guided by this survey to ensure better facilities while preserving the shrine’s spiritual sanctity.
