Ayodhya News: In a significant move aimed at restoring the ancient and cultural identity of Ayodhya, Indian Railways has begun removing remnants of British-era railway symbols and practices. Following directives from the Railway Board to eliminate colonial-era influences across the country, Ayodhya has emerged as one of the leading examples of this transformation.
The effort gained momentum after the landmark Supreme Court verdict on the Ram Janmabhoomi issue in 2019, triggering large-scale redevelopment projects and the revival of Ayodhya’s historical and spiritual significance.
Railway Board Orders Removal of British-Era Railway Symbols
The Railway Board has instructed all railway zones in India to phase out colonial-era symbols and systems rooted in British rule. While the directive is recent, work to remove such historical markers in Ayodhya had already begun after the 2019 Supreme Court verdict on Ram Janmabhoomi.
According to former railway engineer SRR Rizvi, the most prominent example of British-era railway infrastructure in the region was Faizabad Junction, which has now been officially renamed Ayodhya Cantt Junction. He stated that although other railway stations in the region are old, they cannot directly be associated with British colonial administration.
From Faizabad Junction to Ayodhya Cantt: A Symbolic Transformation
Historical records suggest that the original station infrastructure was built nearly 140 years ago between 1880 and 1885. At that time, smaller railway stations in the area did not exist and were established much later.
Following the November 9, 2019 Supreme Court judgment, the Railway Board approved the renaming of Faizabad Junction to Ayodhya Cantt Junction in 2021, based on an initiative from the Uttar Pradesh government.
The renaming was seen as a major step toward strengthening Ayodhya’s spiritual and historical identity while removing traces of colonial influence.
₹400 Crore Redevelopment Plan for Ayodhya Cantt Junction
A major redevelopment project worth approximately ₹400 crore has been proposed for Ayodhya Cantt Junction. Under this ambitious plan:
- The station building will be redesigned with temple-inspired architecture
- Existing infrastructure will be modernized
- Old furniture and ceiling fans at station offices and platforms have already been replaced
- The station is expected to receive a grand appearance similar to Ayodhya Dham Junction
The redevelopment aims to align railway infrastructure with Ayodhya’s status as one of India’s most important religious tourism destinations.
Railway Stations Across the Region Undergoing Modernization
The transformation is not limited to Ayodhya Cantt Junction alone. Several other stations in the railway section are also undergoing modernization and redesign:
- Gosainganj Railway Station – Redevelopment work is currently in progress
- Rudauli Railway Station – Renovation and transformation work has been completed
- Sohawal Railway Station – Changes to the station building’s appearance have already been implemented
These upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernize railway infrastructure while highlighting Ayodhya’s cultural and religious heritage.
Ayodhya’s Growing Identity Beyond Pilgrimage Tourism
With the inauguration of new infrastructure and ongoing redevelopment projects, Ayodhya is rapidly evolving into a major spiritual and tourism hub. The removal of colonial-era railway symbols reflects a larger vision of preserving the city’s ancient identity, religious heritage, and cultural significance.
As Ayodhya continues to attract millions of devotees and tourists each year, projects like the redevelopment of Ayodhya Cantt Junction are expected to strengthen both connectivity and the city’s historical image.
