Ayodhya is poised for a major boost in healthcare infrastructure with plans underway to establish a state-of-the-art cancer hospital through a collaboration between the Tata Group and the Uttar Pradesh government. The project has gained momentum after the city’s erstwhile royal family agreed to donate nearly eight acres of prime land near the Surajkund area.

According to sources, the proposed cancer treatment facility will also see participation from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, making it a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at strengthening advanced medical care in the region.

Royal Family Donates Land for Healthcare Cause

Yatindra Mishra, a member of Ayodhya’s former royal family, confirmed that the land located on the Ayodhya–Ambedkarnagar road near Surajkund will be donated in memory of his father, Bimlendra Mohan Mishra. Bimlendra Mohan Mishra was not only a trustee of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust but also a prominent figure associated with several philanthropic initiatives in Ayodhya.

Mishra highlighted his family’s long-standing tradition of contributing to education and healthcare. He recalled that his great-grandfather had donated land for Saket College and over 50 other educational institutions, while his father had also contributed land for facilities at Karsevak Puram and supported King George’s Medical University in the early 20th century.

Part of Ayodhya’s Healthcare Hub Vision

Officials said the cancer hospital is part of a larger plan by the Uttar Pradesh government to develop Ayodhya into a regional healthcare hub in partnership with private organisations. The broader roadmap includes the construction of a 300-bed hospital and the modernisation of the existing Shri Ram Hospital to provide advanced emergency and diagnostic services.

Chairman of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust’s construction committee, Nripendra Mishra, stated that several key decisions regarding healthcare upgrades have already been taken by the state health department. While cabinet approval is still required for certain components, groundwork for the projects has already begun.

Construction Approvals and Timeline

Regarding the proposed 300-bed hospital, Nripendra Mishra said the tender process has been completed and the construction agency finalised, with approval from the Archaeological Survey of India awaited. Once clearance is granted, construction work is expected to move swiftly.

For the cancer hospital, the facility will be developed by Namo Cancer Care Trust from the private sector. Basic administrative approvals, including a no-objection certificate from the district administration, have already been secured. Following the formal land transfer, construction will commence.

An agreement is also expected to be signed between the implementing organisation and the royal family, likely resulting in the formation of a local trust. Under this arrangement, a member of the Ayodhya royal family will serve as a lifelong trustee, ensuring continued involvement in the project’s governance.

OPD Services Expected Within Two Years

Officials indicated that a preliminary project report has been prepared, while the final detailed project report—covering procurement, infrastructure, and potential imports of specialised equipment—is expected within the next three months. The aim is to begin outpatient department (OPD) services within two years.

Ayodhya Divisional Commissioner Rakesh Kumar said the cancer centre will operate on a “hub-and-spoke” model. The main facility in Ayodhya will function as the hub, while hospitals across nearby districts will act as spokes, referring patients requiring specialised cancer care.

He added that with rising cases of oral and throat cancers in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring Bihar, the centre will also focus on research and the development of targeted treatment strategies for these diseases.
