Tuesday holds special spiritual significance in Sanatan Dharma, as it is dedicated to the worship of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman. Devotees observe fasts and offer prayers on this day with deep faith. According to ancient scriptures, it was on a Tuesday that Lord Ram first met his greatest devotee, Hanuman. This is why Tuesdays, especially those in the month of Jyeshtha, are celebrated as Budhwa or Bada Mangal with great devotion.
But have you ever wondered why Lord Ram considered Hanuman even dearer than his own brother Lakshman? The answer lies in a deeply emotional episode from the Kishkindha Kand of Shri Ramcharitmanas.
The Inspiring Kishkindha Kand Episode
Saint Goswami Tulsidas, in his revered epic Shri Ramcharitmanas, beautifully narrates the divine life, virtues, and leelas of Lord Ram. The Kishkindha Kand describes the first meeting between Lord Ram and Hanuman, a moment filled with humility, devotion, and divine emotion.
After Sita’s abduction, Lord Ram and his younger brother Lakshman wandered through forests in search of her. During this journey, they reached Kishkindha, near the Rishyamukha mountain. Upon seeing the two ascetics, Sugriva, the Vanara king, became fearful, suspecting they might be messengers of Bali. He asked Hanuman to approach them in the disguise of a Brahmin and learn their intentions.
Hanuman Meets Lord Ram
Disguised as a Brahmin, Hanuman respectfully questioned the two sages about their identity. Lord Ram replied calmly, saying:
“I am Ram, the son of King Dasharatha, and this is my younger brother Lakshman. We are searching for Sita, who has been abducted by Ravana.”
Lord Ram then gently asked Hanuman to introduce himself. At that moment, Hanuman realized the divine truth. Overwhelmed with emotion, he revealed his true form, fell at Lord Ram’s feet, and said with folded hands:
“Forgive me, Lord. I could not recognize You. I was only following my duty. I am Your humble servant, Hanuman.”
Tears flowed from Hanuman’s eyes as he expressed his devotion.
The Divine Words of Lord Ram
Moved by Hanuman’s humility and pure devotion, Lord Ram embraced him and spoke words that echo through eternity. This moment is captured in a famous Ramcharitmanas chaupai:
“Sunu kapi jiyaan manasi jani oona,
Tain mam priya Lachiman te doona.”
Meaning:
“Do not feel even the slightest doubt in your heart, O Hanuman. You are dearer to me than even my brother Lakshman.”
Lord Ram further explained that while He treats everyone equally, a devotee who has no refuge except Him is especially dear. Hanuman’s devotion was selfless, unconditional, and exclusive—this is why Lord Ram held him closest to His heart.
Why Hanuman Was Dearer Than Lakshman
Lakshman was Lord Ram’s devoted brother, but Hanuman was His devoted servant, whose entire existence revolved around Ram alone. Hanuman sought nothing for himself—no reward, no recognition—only the joy of serving his Lord. This complete surrender made Hanuman uniquely beloved to Lord Ram.
Spiritual Message for Devotees
This episode teaches that pure devotion, humility, and selfless service are greater than any relationship based on blood. In Sanatan Dharma, a true devotee who surrenders completely to God becomes closest to Him.
That is why Lord Ram declared Hanuman to be dearer than even Lakshman—an eternal example of bhakti that continues to inspire millions of devotees today.
