In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as the symbol of wisdom, humility, and discernment, while Lord Kubera is known as the deity of wealth and prosperity. However, there was a time when Kubera became arrogant because of his immense riches. To teach him a lesson, Lord Ganesha shattered his pride completely. This fascinating episode is mentioned in the Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana.
Kubera’s Arrogance and the Grand Feast Invitation
According to the legend, Lord Kubera possessed limitless wealth and gradually developed excessive pride in his riches. Believing that no one in the universe was as wealthy as him, he decided to showcase his grandeur. Driven by arrogance, Kubera invited Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to Mount Kailash for a lavish feast, intending to display his prosperity.
Lord Shiva, however, understood Kubera’s inner intention. He politely declined the invitation and said that Bal Ganesha (young Lord Ganesha) would attend the feast on his behalf. Kubera felt relieved, thinking that a child would eat very little and would not cause any concern.
When Lord Ganesha Arrived at Kubera’s Palace
When Lord Ganesha reached Kubera’s palace, an enormous variety of delicious dishes was served before him. As Ganesha began eating, his hunger kept increasing instead of being satisfied. One by one, he consumed all the prepared delicacies, yet his hunger remained.
Soon, Ganesha declared that the food was insufficient. A worried Kubera ordered food from the entire city, but even that was not enough. Eventually, Lord Ganesha started consuming Kubera’s wealth, treasures, and even the palace itself. In no time, Kubera was left completely helpless and bankrupt.
Goddess Parvati’s Simple Remedy
Terrified and humbled, Kubera rushed to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, begging for forgiveness. Goddess Parvati gave him a simple solution — a handful of plain roasted rice. When Kubera offered it to Lord Ganesha, his hunger was instantly satisfied.
Lord Ganesha then explained that wealth should be used for righteousness, service, and humility — not for arrogance or ego. Kubera realized his mistake, bowed down in repentance, and vowed to remain humble forever.
Spiritual Message of the Story
This divine story teaches an important lesson: pride born from wealth leads to downfall, while humility and devotion bring true prosperity. Lord Ganesha’s act was not punishment, but a reminder that material riches are meaningless without wisdom and humility.
