Why Ashley Tellis’s Arrest by the FBI Has Become a Major Political Flashpoint in India

Ashley Tellis Arrest by FBI Triggers Political Firestorm in India

The arrest of Ashley Tellis, a renowned Indian-American geopolitical strategist, by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States has sparked a major political controversy in India.

The development has ignited a war of words among Indian political parties, with opposing sides interpreting Tellis’ role and connections differently. While some pointed out that he had worked closely with both Congress-led UPA and BJP-led NDA governments, the BJP alleged that Tellis was part of an “anti-India” ecosystem that was “celebrated by the Opposition.”

Who Is Ashley Tellis and Why Was He Arrested?

Born and educated in Mumbai, Ashley Tellis was arrested over the weekend and formally charged on Monday (US time). The U.S. Department of Justice has accused him of unlawfully retaining classified national defense information.

According to official reports, Tellis allegedly accessed confidential material from both the State Department and the Defense Department, made copies, and stored them at his residence in Vienna, Virginia. Authorities reportedly recovered over 1,000 pages of secret and top-secret documents from his home.

An FBI affidavit revealed that Tellis had been under surveillance for several months, if not years, with agents monitoring his meetings with Chinese government officials.

Political Reactions Erupt Across India

The arrest has set off a political slugfest in India, with leaders, economists, and commentators sharing sharp opinions on social media.

Economist and PM Economic Advisory Council member Sanjeev Sanyal commented on X (formerly Twitter):

“Irrespective of what the FBI finds, we Indians should be clear that Ashley Tellis was not a ‘scholar’ but a deep-state asset.”

He added,

“The question is — which deep state? The U.S. or China?”

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya claimed that Tellis was often celebrated by opposition figures and left-liberal media outlets.

“This explains why Ashley Tellis, often cited and celebrated by India’s Opposition, spoke so frequently and harshly against us,” he said, adding, “The forces working against India are beginning to unravel.”

Malviya also listed several journalists and public figures who had recently interacted with Tellis, hinting at his anti-government bias.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Rajya Sabha MP from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, dismissed Tellis as a sellout:

“Neither an Indian expert nor a South Asia expert — just a sellout to the highest bidder. What a fall.”

Background: Ashley Tellis and His Global Role

Ashley Tellis is a well-known strategic affairs expert who worked with both Republican and Democratic administrations in the United States, including the George W. Bush administration, where he contributed to the Indo-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement.

However, his recent writings have drawn criticism in India for being highly critical of the Modi government.

In his August 2025 article in Foreign Affairs titled “India’s Great-Power Delusions”, and a May 2023 essay “America’s Bad Bet on India”, Tellis argued that New Delhi would not align with Washington against Beijing — a viewpoint many saw as undermining India’s global position.

Due to such opinions, Tellis was frequently featured on Western media platforms and was often regarded as a “darling” of the left-liberal circle for his views that India had “lost its global primacy.”

Experts Question Motives Behind the Arrest

Not everyone believes the charges are straightforward. Some analysts suspect a politically motivated witch-hunt.

Former diplomat K.C. Singh expressed shock over the development, writing:

“Ashley Tellis, of Indian origin, is an outstanding analyst of diplomacy and defense. Is this revenge for past criticism of current rulers or something more? In today’s U.S., it could be either.”

Calls for Probe in India

Several voices in India are now urging the Home Ministry to conduct a parallel probe into Tellis’s activities and connections in India.

Author and commentator Sandip Ghose questioned whether Tellis had direct links with Indian politicians or think tanks.

“Are there politicians he was advising on behalf of foreign masters? What was his role in the U.S. State Department since 2012? Was he a double agent?” Ghose asked in a post on X.

A Divisive Figure in Global Diplomacy

Ashley Tellis, long regarded as a prominent voice on Indo-U.S. relations, remains a divisive figure — admired for his intellect but criticized for his stance on India’s policies. His arrest has not only shocked the diplomatic community but also deepened political polarization within India.

As investigations continue, both in the U.S. and possibly in India, the case is expected to have far-reaching implications for how policymakers and political circles view foreign policy commentators and their influence on domestic politics.
