India Bowling Coach Morne Morkel Gives Major Update on Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma’s 2027 World Cup Chances

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has finally addressed the burning question surrounding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future — and whether the iconic duo can stay in contention for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

Morkel believes both senior players can definitely feature in the 2027 World Cup, provided they stay committed to fitness and continue putting in the hard work required at the international level.

‘Kohli & Rohit can play 2027 World Cup — if they stay fit’

With both players having retired from T20Is and Test cricket, they now focus solely on ODIs. Their reduced workload has sparked speculation about whether they can sustain top-level form for another two years.

Morkel, however, expressed full confidence:

“They’re quality players. As long as they’re happy to put in the hard work and maintain their fitness. Experience is something you can’t replace. They’ve won trophies and know how to handle big tournaments.”

He added that if Kohli and Rohit remain mentally and physically prepared, there is no reason they cannot compete in the next World Cup:

“If they feel their bodies can do it, by all means — they should be there.”

Form & Fitness Under the Scanner

Rohit Sharma made a strong comeback against Australia, scoring a fifty and a century despite some initial rustiness.
Kohli had a mixed outing, starting with two ducks before returning to form with an unbeaten 74 in Sydney.

Reports have suggested that both might be asked to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy ahead of the New Zealand series to maintain match fitness.

Morkel: ‘They gave me sleepless nights’

Morkel also shared his personal experience of bowling to the two superstars during his playing days:

“I’ve bowled to them many times. I’ve had sleepless nights preparing for them. I know how tough it is for bowlers when they’re at the crease.”

2027 World Cup Fire Still Burns Bright

  • Rohit Sharma has been vocal about wanting to play the 2027 World Cup, especially after the heartbreak of the 2023 World Cup final loss to Australia.
  • Virat Kohli, though quieter publicly, is believed to be equally determined to make one final World Cup appearance before ending his ODI journey.

As India prepares for their tour of South Africa, Morkel’s statement provides a major boost to fans hoping to see the Rohit-Kohli pair continue their legacy on the world stage.
