India began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a 29-run victory over the USA, thanks to a sensational unbeaten innings from captain Suryakumar Yadav. Batting first, India scored 161/9 in 20 overs, while the USA could manage only 132/8 in reply.
India will next face Namibia on February 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
Suryakumar Yadav Rescues India After Early Collapse
In the third match of the T20 World Cup 2026, the USA cricket team pushed the world’s No.1 side India to the brink. India were struggling badly before skipper Suryakumar Yadav held the innings together with a calm yet explosive knock.
Suryakumar smashed an unbeaten 84 off 49 balls, guiding India past the 150-run mark. In the final over, bowled by his former Mumbai teammate Saurabh Netravalkar, Suryakumar hit two fours and two sixes, lifting India’s total to 161/9.
USA Win Toss, Bowl First
The USA team, captained by Monank Patel, featured five players of Indian origin, three of whom have extensive experience playing at this venue. Taking pitch conditions into account, Monank won the toss and opted to bowl first.
Despite expectations of good bounce from the red-soil surface, the pitch played slow, with the ball stopping on the bat—making aggressive strokeplay difficult.
India’s Batting Struggles on Slow Pitch
Apart from Netravalkar, other American bowlers bowled with discipline, while Monank Patel set sharp fielding placements. Indian batters came prepared for bounce and big shots, but misjudged the conditions.
The ball held up on the surface, leading to mistimed shots. Eight of India’s nine wickets fell to catches, while Varun Chakravarthy was run out on the final ball. Six Indian batters failed to reach double figures, including three who were dismissed for ducks.
Early Setback for India
India expected an explosive start from Abhishek Sharma, but he was dismissed for zero. At one stage, India were 45/1 in 5.1 overs, but South Africa-born bowler Wayne turned the game around dramatically.
He picked up four wickets, including three in one over, leaving India at 46/4 in the powerplay. Wayne dismissed Ishan Kishan (20), Tilak Varma (25), and Shivam Dube (0) in a devastating spell.
Suryakumar Holds One End Firm
India were 86/6 after 14 overs when head coach Gautam Gambhir stepped in during the break and spoke to Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel. Following the discussion, Suryakumar adjusted his approach and focused on strike rotation and calculated aggression.
Former Mumbai teammates Shubham Ranjane and Harmeet Singh also troubled Indian batters, but while wickets kept falling at one end, Suryakumar stood tall at the other.
India Cross 160-Run Mark
In the final over, Suryakumar retained the strike and smashed 21 runs, taking India beyond 160. He finished with 84 runs, including 10 fours and 4 sixes.
Supporting contributions came from:
- Axar Patel – 14 runs
- Rinku Singh – 6 runs
- Hardik Pandya – 5 runs
- Arshdeep Singh – 4 runs
For the USA, Shadley van Schalkwyk was the standout bowler with four wickets.
USA Fall Short Despite Brief Resistance
Chasing 162, the USA were immediately put under pressure by India’s bowlers. Arshdeep Singh conceded just 2 runs in the first over, setting the tone.
In the second over, Mohammed Siraj dismissed wicketkeeper Andries Gous (6). Arshdeep then struck again to remove USA captain Monank Patel for a two-ball duck. Siraj followed up by dismissing opener Saiteja Mukkamalla (2).
Partnership Broken by Varun Chakravarthy
After early setbacks, Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamurthi stitched together a 58-run partnership off 52 balls, briefly reviving USA’s hopes.
The stand was broken by Varun Chakravarthy, with wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan playing a key role by stumping Milind Kumar (34).
Axar Patel Seals the Win
In the 16th over, vice-captain Axar Patel delivered a decisive spell, claiming back-to-back wickets. He dismissed Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37) and Harmeet Singh (0), effectively sealing the match in India’s favour.
A Familiar Challenge from USA
This wasn’t the first time the USA tested India. During the 2024 T20 World Cup in Nassau County, the USA restricted India to a tense chase on a difficult pitch. On that occasion too, Suryakumar Yadav scored a crucial half-century.
Once again, despite India’s batting struggles, the bowling unit maintained relentless pressure, ensuring a successful start to the World Cup campaign.
