Ayodhya has officially emerged as India’s first Solar City, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey toward renewable energy and sustainable development. The sacred city is currently generating 250 million units of electricity, sending a strong message of energy conservation and environmental responsibility across the nation.
Known as the capital of the Suryavansh, Ayodhya is being developed as a model solar city under a well-planned renewable energy framework. The district administration has provided 165 hectares of land free of cost on lease to NTPC for the installation of a 40 MW solar power plant. The land is located along the banks of the Saryu River in the Majha Rampur Halwara area.
Electricity produced from this solar plant is supplied to the grid through the Darshan Nagar substation, from where power is distributed across the district. The plant has already begun producing around 250 million units of electricity, significantly contributing to Ayodhya’s energy needs.
Growing Adoption of Rooftop Solar Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana
On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, it is noteworthy to see the increasing participation of residents in the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. With rising electricity demand, the central government launched this scheme to promote rooftop solar installations.
So far:
- 3,475 households in Ayodhya have installed rooftop solar panels
- 7,808 residents have registered for solar plant installation
A 1-kilowatt rooftop solar system produces an average of 4–5 units of electricity per day.
How Rooftop Solar Works
For installing a rooftop solar plant, 10 square meters of shadow-free roof space per kilowatt is required. Electricity generated is fed into the power grid, and net metering ensures that the excess power is adjusted against the consumer’s electricity bill by the concerned DISCOM.
The cost incurred by consumers for installing solar plants is typically recovered within 3 to 4 years through reduced electricity bills.

To make the process easier, the government has also provided access to bank loans, with multiple banks listed on the portal for financial assistance.
With large-scale solar power generation and increasing public participation, Ayodhya is steadily moving toward energy self-reliance, setting an example for cities across India in clean and green development.
